The government of Pakistan would build Malakand Tunnel Project with Korean loan to provide all weather transportation link between Malakand, Chitral District and rest of the country. An official of National Highway Authority (NHA) told APP the Malakand tunnel would facilitate the passengers and cargo traffic and reduce accidents and help achieve the balanced development across the country. He said that the proposed Malakand Tunnel was part of federalized Nowshehra-Chitral Highway(N-45) which passes through Mardan, Malakand, Chakdara. The NHA official said that the 14km long Malakand road passes over Malakand height be-tween Dargai and Batkhela. N-45 functions as major North-South trunk road connecting Grand Trunk Road (N-5). He said that the NHA has hired the services of M/s Yooshin Engineering Corporation in associa-tion with Dongsung Engineering Co. Ltd. of Korea for the detailed design and construction supervision of the Malakand Tunnel construction project. He said that the construction of Malakand tunnel would not only shorten distance for travellers belonging to Dir, Malakand, Swat and adjacent areas but also provide Pakistani goods an easy access to Central Asian states.The 9.7km project includes three bridges and approach roads on both sides of the tunnel.
